The Journey of Gleon Tea
A Humble Beginning
The seeds of Gleon Tea’s story were planted in 1963, when Mr. I. G. Victor, just 16 at the time, embarked on his tea career at Langdale Tea Estate in Thalawakele. As a trainee, he honed his skills under the tutelage of seasoned professionals, laying the groundwork for what would become a 45-year career dedicated to the tea industry. This chapter marked the start of a remarkable journey, eventually leading to the creation of Gleon Tea as we know it today.
Mastering the Craft
By 1975, Mr. Victor had already gained over a decade of experience across prestigious tea estates. From Langdale to Radella, and then Logie, his knowledge of tea expanded rapidly. It was at Kirklees Tea Estate, where he began working in 1971, that he truly solidified his expertise. His mastery encompassed every aspect of the tea industry—from nurturing young plants in the nurseries to managing thriving green fields and overseeing factory operations. These years were transformative, turning his passion for tea into a profound legacy.
Launching Nuwaraeliya Tea
In 1989, Mr. Victor’s extensive experience culminated in the founding of the Nuwaraeliya Tea brand. This milestone in his career introduced the domestic market to a tea of exceptional quality, deeply rooted in heritage. For over three decades, Nuwaraeliya Tea has captivated tea enthusiasts across Sri Lanka, solidifying its place in the country’s tea history.
A Legacy of Dedication
After an extraordinary 45-year career, Mr. Victor retired in 2007, with his final posting at Brunswick Estate in Maskeliya. His service from 1995 to 2007 at Brunswick epitomized his dedication to tea cultivation. Throughout his journey, Mr. Victor’s contributions to the industry were invaluable, leaving behind a legacy marked by commitment, knowledge, and excellence in every estate he worked.
Gleon Teas — A Global Vision
In 2021, the journey of Gleon Tea took a new direction. With a wealth of experience spanning over 58 years, Mr. Victor, together with his son Leon and daughter-in-law Kalpani Fernando, launched Gleon Teas for the international market. Building on the foundation laid by Nuwaraeliya Tea, Gleon Teas aims to bring the finest Ceylon teas to a global audience. With a vision to deliver world-renowned blends and herbal teas, the legacy of Mr. Victor continues to flourish as Gleon Teas sets its sights on the world stage.
